About

Intro

This site has been researched by Barrie Bell Hodgson and am now aware that my ancestor Christopher Bell and his family, who died in Farlam on the 1st of June 1708, were neighbours of Joseph Bell’s family, and although not directly related they may have helped them to bring in the harvest there.

My father Barrie died in 2021 and is no longer able to maintain this website – if you are motivated to take over please get in touch at billh@garden84.net.

Define a hero! A person who deliberately and courageously overcomes obstacles for the benefit of others, without any regard for personal consequences.

The site is dedicated to the Cumbrian Joseph Bell & his fellow engineers who were undoubtedly  national heroes in the saving of so many lives on R.M.S. Titanic on the 15th of April 1912. Please see the New Book Announcement page on  the site for details of our recent illustrated biography, ‘Tarn to Titanic: Life & Times of Joseph Bell Chief Engineer’ that was  published on the 2nd of September 2013.
